THE DR. BOBBYE MARIE BOOKER COLEMAN SCHOLARSHIP (Intended only for those who will pursue the field of Education)

The Dr. Bobbye Marie Booker Coleman scholarship was created in an effort to support the field of education and minority educators by celebrating the life of one that embraced education at its fullest. Dr. Coleman identified with Delta Sigma Theta’s Programmatic Thrust -Educational Development wholeheartedly early in her life. She was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. with Delta Omega chapter at Bishop College in 1966.  She was active in the sorority until her passing on October 12, 2017. Her last chapter affiliation was with the North Harris County Alumnae Chapter.

Dr. Coleman was an educator for over 35 years. Her first love for education presented itself when she graduated from Shephard Gill School of Practical Nursing in Boston. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Bishop College. She also received a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood from Atlanta University. Lastly, she completed a Doctorate of Philosophy in Early Childhood Education from Georgia State.

Her love for the field of education carried over into her professional life in positions she held such as:

  • teaching Head Start Programs in the Boston Public School system;
  • teaching early childhood and serving as the Director of Child Care in the Atlanta Public School system.

Dr. Coleman was fully vested in our children and young adults and expanded her professional repertoire into higher education after years in secondary education. She worked several years at Morris Brown College as an Assistant Professor. In addition, she taught for the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Spelman College. Her most memorable teaching experience was when she was selected as a representative in an International Project in Liverpool, where she enrolled at the University of Liverpool to study Early Transatlantic Slave Trade and Liverpool’s Black Roots. Upon her return to Spelman College, she was selected to participate in an Early Childhood Higher Education Faculty Initiative sponsored by Wheelock College.

North Harris County Alumnae desired to uplift the name of our beloved Soror Dr. Bobbye Marie Booker Coleman with a scholarship to a high school candidate that embodies the same passion in the field of Education.
